IN THIS WORLD

IN THIS WORLD combines dance and a loose narrative in a short film about grief and love. The 9 minute film is a collaboration of filmmaker Christopher Faull with composer Stephen Matters and dancer/choreographer Alison Currie.

Laden with shopping a woman approaches a taxi at night. Face wet with tears, the young male driver sits behind the wheel staring into space. The woman hesitates, but his is the only cab at the rank, so she climbs in the back. It's some moments before the driver acknowledges her. As they drive, the woman asks if he's alright. He lifts his sad eyes to the rear-view mirror.

In a darkened hall a young woman dances alone...

More a poetic than strictly narrative journey, the film intercuts scenes from the taxi with a series of dance solos as the driver reflects upon the growth of his love for the young dancer – whom he recently lost.

The production process was unusual. Beginning with the structure of the film's emotional journey, the improvised solo dance pieces were filmed first – without music. Then the composer wrote and produced the music based upon these performances. At the same time the dramatised scenes were written and filmed, then roughly edited to the first sketches of music. The composer looked at the developing film and revised the music. Finally, some additional material shot, and the film was recut.
